Mini Detox for the day after a big night out!

So, we all do it sometimes... Drink too much, binge on a little too much food, and take it a bit too far some nights and weekends. As much as we intend to have just one glass of wine, sometimes it all goes awry.

I remember the days of being able to go for days on very little sleep, drinking my way through it all, and feeling great.

How times have changed! Nowadays, I feel like a toxic mess after too much booze. Like I've poisoned myself. There are a few reasons for this: (1) I'm getting older, (2) I binge and drink too much, and (3) My body has become used to feeling good and healthy and completely punishes me when I abuse it.

As I've stopped drinking in the week and often go weekends without drinking, when I do have a few, it really hurts me the next day. I feel so dehydrated and flat, demotivated to do anything, and generally sorry for myself. I believe this is quite a common feeling among most of my friends, too?

If you're going to drink, here are my tips to minimize the pain:

  1. Drink lots of water and coconut water that day to hydrate to the max.
  2. Enjoy a gym session or a long walk earlier in the day.
  3. Drink organic. (If I'm going to drink, I stick to organic Vodka or a premium brand with fresh lime and soda.)
  4. Try to drink less.

I've also begun to get into a routine just before bed. It really makes a difference and totally sorts you out so your body can rehydrate and balance itself again.

Before you go to bed

Drink water at least one hour before you go to bed and have a coconut water

As soon as you wake up

  • Have a class of hot water and lemon, followed by Vitamin C (1000mg soluble Bio Ceuticals)
  • Enjoy one cup of coconut water
  • Scrambled eggs on gluten-free toast (Buckwheat)
  • Have a banana - Magnesium  (+ take powdered Magnesium Bio Ceuticals in filtered water)
  • Detox Green Tea
  • Drink some chlorophyll
  • Liver detox supplements

Later on in the day

Make sure you have a green juice and have a hearty salad with protein for lunch. Resist the temptation to eat chips, french fries, and carb-heavy foods. They actually make you feel worse, deplete your energy, and cause bloating.

Moving forward

It's important to pick your battles! If you're going to have a night on the town, choose nights or events that are worth going to, and say NO sometimes. Give your body a break Monday to Friday and have some weekends that are alcohol-free.

Obviously, it's better not to put yourself into this state in the first place but most of us are a little bit weak, especially when it comes to alcohol and having a good time, so when it does happen, try and follow the above strategies to help prepare for it.

10 Reasons To Start Drinking Warm Water and Lemon

I drink Warm water and lemon every morning, as soon as I get up, it is part of my morning ritual and one I very rarely miss. I squeeze a whole lemon into a hand juicer, pour warm water over it and then remove press and pour juice and water into a cup (you get all the benefit of the lemon).

There are so many benefits as to why we should drink it everyday and this is why:

  1. High in Natural Vit C – helps support your immune system
  2. Hydration – helps the body hydrate more effectively than water
  3. Balances your PH levels- believe it or not Lemons are actually alkaline when they enter the body
  4. Aids Digestion-  warm water helps stimulate the body and start pushing toxins through
  5. Makes you Pee- the lemon flushes out toxins through your urinary tract
  6. Repairs Skin- known to help with ageing with lemons anti-oxidant properties
  7. Detoxifies Liver- lemon acts as a liver cleanser
  8. Promotes Healing- Vitamin C helps to heal wounds and maintains healthy bones/tissue
  9. Reduces Appetite- the Pectin in Lemon is a soluble fibre and helps you to feel fuller for longer
  10. Kills bacteria in mouth- lemon juice acts as an antiseptic in your mouth, gives you fresh breath and gets rid of bad bacteria.

It just makes sense to start your day with Warm Lemon Water.. If you don't like the taste, add a little bit of Manuka Honey, you will grow to love the taste, when you start seeing all the health benefits it is giving you.

BALANCE

BALANCE

This the word that defines my approach to wellness coaching, life is all about Balance. The art of balance is like riding a wave and finding the sweet spot where you are steady and not tipping over too much on either side.

NO PREACHING OR DEPRIVATION

Im not going to preach wellness, my target audience are people, like me, who still indulge ever so often but are interested in looking after themselves and learning ways to do this through food and exercise, at home and work.

I will not be encouraging people to start depriving themselves of things they enjoy and love. What we will learn to do, is to balance and moderate our lives with the inclusion of some of the naughty stuff but heavily outweighed by lots of good stuff!

BELLS

I recently just got married and the celebrations have only just stopped, i am feeling pretty toxic through the consumption of too much alcohol and food! I was feeling very healthy and light before the wedding but the indulgence started very soon after, although it has been enjoyable, i am ready to get back on the path of wellness.

It's good to let go sometimes and not be so consumed about what you are eating but it's important to still be conscious of what you are eating, where it has come from and how it has been prepared. I did not binge on junk food, for me this would be poisoning my body, depleting my energy and would make me sick. I ate foods i would normally avoid like bread, cheese, meat and pasta all washed down with lots of wine. I dined on beautiful food from stunning restaurants but i did take it to far and I'm feeling it now, bloated and my skin is dull and i look and feel tired.

GREEN

This does bring me back to the old word BALANCE, i definitely tipped a little over the side but I'm firmly on my way back to riding the wave and maintaining the healthy lifestyle i have become accustomed to enjoying. I will definitely enjoy a few glasses of wine here and there and maybe some brie and french bread in the not too distance future but for now, its green juices, smoothies and lots of beautiful salads and veggies.

I love waking up feeling fresh, light and clear, to enable me to be the best person i can be for myself, my children and now my Husband!

How To Help Those You Love To Eat Healthier

heart sea.jpg

This can be a really difficult thing to do, there is a fine line between educating your nearest and dearest and driving them mad! They can get sick of you harping on about healthy food and living, especially if they are not in the same headspace as you.

It is much easier to help facilitate change to people who want to make changes, who are willing to listen and learn, they are the easy ones. These people give fantastic feedback and give everything a go. Its a really lovely feeling when people contact you, telling you they have made a small change, given something up or trying something new, these are the moments that make it all worth while.

I recently just launched my Health and Wellness website and Facebook page, its been amazing and i have had some fantastic support from friends and family. It is a tough one putting yourself out there and on the line, especially in the health and wellness space, as they are people who LOVE to hear what you have to say and there are other's who do not.

I have noticed that those who don't want to understand wellness are friends and family who are the unhealthiest,  they smoke, drink too much and are sometimes overweight. They are the ones who are threatened by what you post and blog about because they don't want to hear the truth that some things we eat and drink do damage our health and wellbeing.

Some people love to keep their heads in the sand and refuse to acknowledge that they are putting their lives and health at risk by poisoning it with processed foods, fizzy drinks and fried food.  I never preach to people about how they should eat, as they can become defensive and intimidated by you judging there life choices. I find some people's attitudes are that it is easier to put down people who are healthy, so they feel better about themselves. They can be hard one's to crack and sadly they will probably only make healthier choices when they are forced to through health issues. Prevention is better than cure and eating healthy and feeding your body goodness is what stops us getting sick in the first place.

My husband was pretty unhealthy when I met him; he ate a lot of processed foods, white bread, red meat and fried food. He would have his dinner with a loaf of cheap white bread on the table every night and a lot of what he cooked had packet sauces and gravy added to it. The positive thing here was that he did cook and enjoyed it, so it was really just a process of teaching him how to make his chilli using fresh and real ingredients rather than powders/sauces, weaning him off white bread to brown and reducing the amount he was eating.

Meat free Monday's are something we have started doing at home, my husband struggled with it massively at first, he is a big meat eater and like many men, finds it hard to not have a meal without meat, Bacon for brekkie, ham/turkey for lunch and of course meat for dinner but he is more than happy to do it now and encourages us all to have a few days off in the a week now, he even recently did meat free week.

My kids are totally cool with meat free Mondays and embrace it full heartedly, they also did the meat free week last month. In fact children can be the easiest to encourage healthy eating habits(as you do not have to change too many years of engrained eating patterns if you start early on), if from a young age they are introduced to vegetables and fruit, told about where food comes from, grow their own veggies and help cook, then they too will be interested in healthy food. My son recently at school started telling his class about the health benefits of Kale and how he likes it cooked, the greatest gift you can give your children is knowledge to empower them, especially around food.

3 years later he is much more health conscious, he still slips back sometimes, but he's only human and men love their chips, he now makes homemade ones cooked in olive oil! The majority of the time he has lots of veg and salad on his plate, we cook healthy meals together, he eats food he never dreamed he would and raves about Kale and Mung Bean Fettucine to all his friends. It has been an education journey for him, just letting him know what’s good for you and getting him to read articles that back up what I am saying.. So he doesn't think I'm completely mad!

The most recent battle we have had is with Pork, Sausages, bacon and ham, such a staple part of his diet and the kids- he really did not believe me when I said sausages could kill him:) but low and behold Body & Soul ran a story about the dangers of processed meat that week in the Sunday papers, so he took note and reduced down the amount he consumes.

As most of my blog's are about Balance this is something we try to do in our own lives, this is what I encourage, do not deprive yourself of things you like and love, if they are bad for you, then just have them less and have more of the good stuff to outweigh the bad. After time, you start loving the good stuff more, especially when you see the health benefits and energy levels you get from making healthier choices.

All I really want is for my friends and family to live a long as possible, stay fit and healthy. LOVE food, EAT well and be HAPPY.

6 TIPS TO HELP FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO EAT HEALTHIER

  1. Be a subtle educator; do not push too much information on them in the beginning.
  2. Take it slowly and work together to make small changes, keep it all as simple as possible.
  3. Get them excited about new foods and flavours, get creative in the kitchen together.
  4. Try one day a week to try new thing’s, meat free Monday’s are a great idea and can be part of a routine.
  5. Always remind the person the reasons why they are wanting to eat healthier, how it is helping them and the physical benefits.
  6. Do a vision board of how they see themselves looking after they make lifestyle changes. Cut out pictures of healthy food and meals they like and would like to make.

How it all Began...

HOW IT ALL BEGAN ...

Heart.jpg

This is my first Wellness Blog, a little introduction to where my mission for wellness has come from and how it all began.

I have spent the last few years avidly following other peoples blogs, learning more and more about health and wellness. I have studied life coaching for over 2 years now, specialising in health, wellness and workplace coaching, expanding my mind and knowledge in this area, preparing and getting ready for this moment.

LAY OF THE LAND

As a child i grew up in the countryside of England, my Mum was very health conscious and eco friendly, even back in the day when awareness was not as prevalent as it is now.

The town we lived near was very alternative, it had a hippy vibe, there were travellers living off the land, lots of boy and girls with dreadlocks, colourful clothes and diversity.

We were fortunate to be surrounded by farms and lots of land, with people who were conscious of growing food without chemicals, sustainability and cared about what they were putting in their bodies. Funnily enough, the irony here was that there was a lot of dope smoking and drug taking going on but they all ate healthy food!

FOOD

My sister and i were always encouraged to try different foods and our plates always had a majority of veggies on them, mostly always organic. My mum always cooked fresh food for us every night and this is something i endeavour to do for my children on a daily basis, there is something very rewarding in feeding your children healthy food and watching them enjoy eating it.

A lot of the veggies we ate were pulled up from the earth and eaten that day, at the time i never paid much attention to this and its not until now i realise how privileged we were as kids to be able to eat like this.

My mum was a single mother who did not have lots of money but we were comfortable,we had a good education and ate well but most our clothes had holes in them! These were her priorities, she spent money on buying organic where possible and it was always cheaper to buy direct from farms than supermarkets.

LUNCH BOX

I have memories of opening my lunch box at school to sandwiches that were made out of bread that was as heavy as a brick and dried up! i would look around at my friends with their soft white bread and packets of crisps, looking longingly and wishing i could try theirs. My Sandwiches used to end up in the bin most days, especially if they had gone soggy with the cucumber and tomato! This is one thing i have not subjected my boys too, they have rye bread but its soft and not soggy!

THE FUTURE

I could go on with more stories about my childhood but this blog would go on forever. The point i want to get across is that i grew up eating healthy food, using toothpaste without Sulphates and no Fluoride, Shampoo and conditioners that were chemical free (and never seemed to work back in the day!), never paid any attention to any of it and its only in the last few years i have realised what valuable lessons in life my mother taught me.

I can now share these with my children as they embark into a world that is becoming more and more aware of its vulnerability, its need for sustainability and educating the next generation on how to eat, live and survive.
